At Halikounas beach you can find private surfing with parachuting, bike paths in idyllic landscape, unique walk paths around the lake Korission and unique forests of mainly cedar and juniper trees & lush vegetation between lake and sea. This is well away from the main touristic beaches… Here there are no hotels or bars and the beach remains pristine and very safe for swimming as the waters are shallow for some distance. The nature at the South of Corfu has remained untouched and it does not get very busy even in the high season. With a few beach bars with sun beds & umbrellas to rent and snack bars. It’s the perfect getaway for couples and families who want to enjoy the beach, the sun & the beautiful green nature of Corfu! Even in the peak summer season this beach is uncrowded as it is not easy to reach unless by hired car. Interestingly, various access points for wheelchairs have been provided. Other beaches, such as Prasoudi & Kanouli can be reached within a few minutes’ drive.

A few kilometers inland, in the hills above Halikounas Beach and set amongst dense forest, is the small village of Agios Matheos, one of Corfu’s largest and most traditional and picturesque. With a population of 1,600, the majority of which are farmers, the village is particularly renowned for its main street lined with cafes, bars and shops.

Also, in this area is the 13th century Byzantine fortress of Gardiki, built by Michael, the despot of Epirus, which is well preserved. Nearby Gardiki cave was inhabited in about 20,000 BC by Paleolithic man.
